Gonullu is one of the Ottoman provincial light cavalry formations. Gonullu were volunteers and served for a share in spoils of war, and sometimes a small pay. The formation was made-up of squadrons of varying strength that were combined into larger units during campaigns. Their armament was very diverse and included: spears, sabers, bows, javelins etc. They did not use any protective equipment apart from shields. As a typical light cavalry, Gonullu were mainly used for reconnaissance, screening, and spreading terror and destruction in the enemy territory. In battles they operated mainly on the flanks and showered the enemy with arrows from their bows
