Raised from American settlers, the Provincial regiments were full-time soldiers who had signed up for one campaigning season. Equipped and uniformed as regulars, they were not as keen as the British to stand up in lines and be shot at, so fought more like light infantry. The Provincial Regiments proved their mettle at numerous battles throughout the French Indian Wars and provided the vital manpower that was needed to win the war.
