Bunkers such as this were the linchpin of Nazi Germany's 'Atlantic Wall'. An extensive system of fortifications built between 1942 and 1944, this Atlantic Wall was designed as a defence against an anticipated Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. As such it was built along the entire coast of continental Europe and Scandinavia.
