Scientific and engineering elite hardly ever can be seen outside of comfortable institutes and corporate buildings. That’s why engineering support units are recruited from third category citizens’ kids. Bright teenagers go through centralized tests, and those who pass sign the contract, which on the one hand ensures an education that urban poor can by no means afford, but on the other hand imposes almost impossible obligations in case of dissolution attempt. Engineers have essential implants which enable them to control cargo drones and static turrets, but provide next to zero personal combat potential. Engineers’ service is hard and risky. Very few of them expect to live until retirement but everyone hopes to pay back an educational loan someday and get a job in one of the major corporations.
